Question Randy Moss all you want – his level of effort and sometimes-bizarre behavior over the years, for example – but one thing that is absolutely beyond any doubt is that he is one of the most gifted pure athletes ever to walk this earth. And judging by the basketball exploits of his daughter, Sydney, he passed that trait along to the next generation.
Currently, Sydney’s in the news for picking up a scholarship offer from Florida. She already had offers from Louisville, Kansas, Xavier, West Virginia, and Dayton on the table…and she has two more seasons of high school ball left. That list will expand if she keeps putting up numbers like this past season (22.6 points, 10.8 rebounds per game).
And as the Boston Herald’s Rap Sheet blog pointed out earlier this year, it goes beyond that. There was this recap of a game where Sydney destroyed the other team and made the opposing coach say things like, “I think we got a little mentally fatigued just having to be so cognizant of where Sydney Moss was.”
But what especially stuck out was what her own coach said:
“As good of a basketball player as she is, she’s an even better all around athlete.”
Like father, like daughter, indeed. And while they also pointed out a blog post citing past “questions” about her “attitude,” a more recent feature by the author of that same post notes her attitude was exemplary this past season.
Moss is definitely a player to watch for the coming two years, and it’ll be interesting to see if she winds up at a perennial power in college, where she would undoubtedly be accompanied by tons of hype. And if she keeps her current levels of play up, most of the hype might be for her, rather than the father whose freakish abilities she inherited.
