There is a big difference between the “Patriot Way” of doing things and the “Brad Childress Way” of doing things, according to ESPN’s Tedy Bruschi.
Bruschi railed heavily on the Minnesota Vikings‘ head coach, calling him “inept” in the way he has handled uber-talented, uber-controversial wide receiver Randy Moss. The Vikings, of course, waived Moss from the team after a sub-par performance against the Patriots this weekend. (Moss’ bizarre postgame interview didn’t help matters much, either).
Bruschi’s obvious devotion to the Patriots is a sight to behold (and slightly unbecoming of an analyst who is paid to be objective), but let’s set that aside for a second.
There is something clearly amiss in Minnesota. You don’t drop a player like Randy Moss because of one bad game, one bizarre interview, and one snotty critique of a hometown caterer, especially after giving up a third round pick to get him. So why was he cut loose?
As of now, all signs point to a misguided attempt by Childress to regain control of his team. Since Brett Favre, who has been critical of his head coach numerous times, is untouchable, Childress may have sought to make an example of Moss.
Now, ownership is mad, the fans are mad, and Brad Childress may have worked himself into a hole that he can’t get out of.
